🌈 Short FAQ: Gender Identity vs. Sexual Orientation
❓ What’s the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation?
-
Gender identity is about who you are — your internal sense of being male, female, both, neither, or something else.
-
Sexual orientation is about who you’re attracted to emotionally, romantically, or physically.
❓ Can someone be transgender and straight?
Yes! For example, a transgender woman (assigned male at birth, identifies as female) who is attracted to men is straight. Being transgender doesn’t automatically mean you are gay.
❓ Does being non-binary affect who you’re attracted to?
No. Non-binary is a gender identity. A non-binary person can be attracted to men, women, multiple genders, or none at all — just like anyone else.
❓ Is gender identity the same as biological sex?
No. Biological sex is based on physical attributes like chromosomes and anatomy. Gender identity is how you personally understand and experience your gender.
❓ Do all transgender people medically transition?
Not necessarily. Some trans people choose hormone therapy or surgeries; others don’t. Transitioning is a personal choice and doesn’t determine if someone is truly transgender.
